The Construction Controller is responsible for providing oversight to the Accounting Department and for managing the direct accounting activities for the various construction projects of the company. The Construction Controller will work closely with senior management and the project management team to deliver, while incorporating sound internal controls, an accurate and timely monthly “Construction-in-Progress” (CIP) report. The Construction Controller will oversee the accuracy and timing of the project billing cycle, subcontractor approval and funding, while knowing and understanding the profit position of each project. In addition, the Construction Controller will be a key member of the “ProCore” implementation team as well as monitor and manage the firm’s Subcontractor Default Insurance (SDI) program.


  • Review monthly contractor billings and review the financial update of all projects in Timberline and Procore.
  • Review the monthly CIP with management and prepare and input all related journal entries to Sage and be sure that the budget and cost records are current and accurate in ProCore.
  • Understand all billing agreements, and keep the project/construction team apprised of all target dates and deadlines.
  • Maintain communication with Project Managers regarding contract status, approved change orders, claims, and disputes.
  • Assist in management and review of Subcontractor pre-qualification process.
  • Meet all accounting department monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting deadlines.
  • Provide assistance with the preparation of the annual budget and quarterly forecasts.
  • Key contact to outside financial partners (bankers, audit, tax personnel).

Direct reports:

3-4 Project Accountants. Project Accountants are responsible for the cost control for their assigned projects which includes:


  • Invoice entry into Sage 300 (committed cost and short-form PO’s)
  • Tracking the subcontractor commitments and change orders (no costs allowed above committed cost)
  • Payments against those commitments through Textura
  • Confirmation that all insurance requirements have been met prior to payment
  • Collection of lien waivers from subcontractors


  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting; CPA beneficial.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in construction accounting.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Audit background helpful.
  • Ability to multi-task, work under pressure with minimal oversight, display a high degree of initiative and accuracy and effectively manage time and workload.
  • High attention to detail; must possess the confidence that work product is accurate and complete.
  • Ability to initiate new ideas to streamline routine tasks.
  • Experienced user of Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate (Timberline).
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including conditional formulas and formatting.
